NEW YORK, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A firefighter who died at the World Trade Center was mistakenly buried in the grave of another firefighter from the same engine company, a medical examiner spokeswoman said Wednesday.
The remains of firefighter Christopher Santora were initially misidentified as those of Jose Guadalupe. Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner, said the body was handed over to Guadalupe's family, who held a funeral in Queens last month.
A DNA test detected the mistake on Tuesday, she said.
Both men worked at Manhattan's Engine Co. 54 in the Hell's Kitchen section of Manhattan, which lost 15 members as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Borakove said both men had the same congenital abnormality in their necks, causing the confusion. Dental X-rays were not available to doctors making the initial identification.
Santora's body was exhumed this week and will be buried on Saturday. Guadalupe's body is still missing.
