O'Neill back on job after football injury

WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill is back on the job Friday after a brief visit to a Washington hospital because of a rib injury he sustained while playing football with his grandchildren on Thanksgiving, a spokesman said.

X-rays conducted at Walter Reed Army Medical Center showed a bruised rib, requiring no further medical treatment.

O'Neill was at work Friday before going to the hospital and returned to the office Friday after the visit. The spokesman said he expects no changes in his schedule.

O'Neill, 65, was the chairman and chief executive officer of Alcoa from 1987-1999 and is the 72nd Treasury Secretary of the United States.

Faced with joshing, the spokesman would not speculate on how -- if at all -- the injury might impact O'Neill's chances if he were to try out for a starting position in the National Football League next season.
