Grand jury seeks Condit documents

WASHINGTON, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- A federal grand jury investigating the disappearance of Washington intern Chandra Levy has issued a subpoena to Rep. Gary Condit seeking documents backing up information the California Democrat provided to investigators last summer.

NBC News reported Thursday that, according to sources, the subpoena was the first issued by the Washington grand jury and calls on Condit to turn over information pertaining to a chronology of events that Condit provided to Washington police detectives looking into Levy's mysterious and baffling disappearance.

Grand jury proceedings are secret and the exact contents of the documents sought by the subpoena were not known. Condit's lawyer implied they were routine and not incriminating.

"Issuing a subpoena was not necessary," Condit's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, told NBC. "However, whatever the reasons were for its issuance, Congressman Condit and his office will, as they have in the past, provide the information law enforcement seeks."

Levy, 24, vanished last spring as she prepared to move back to her parents' Modesto home after completing a college internship with the Bureau of Prisons. Condit, who represents Levy's district, reportedly has confirmed to police that he was romantically involved with Levy, although he has denied it publicly.

Condit is not considered a suspect in a crime, and Levy's disappearance is still being investigated as a missing person case rather than a crime.
