FBI reveals profile of anthrax mailer

NEW YORK, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- The FBI is expected to reveal details of its profile of the anthrax mailer Friday, CBS News reported Thursday night.

Investigators believe the suspect is a "mature male," probably born in the United States, who has some education and is not a Muslim, according to "The CBS Evening News With Dan Rather."

The CBS report quoted a former FBI profiler, Gregg McCrary, who said the FBI has not yet ruled out the possibility that the anthrax mailer could be associated with Osama bin Laden, but that theory is not the predominating perception at this time.

"They're also, I know, looking at the possibility of a homegrown individual -- maybe the loner paranoid type of individual as well who may be doing this," McCrary told CBS.

The investigation is hampered because they have very little to work with -- the two anthrax letters, one sent to NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw and one sent to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D.

"The insight one can get from a 39-word note is limited at best," McCrary told CBS. "But there may be some indicators, and a few things to look at."

Analysts have concluded that misspellings in the letters were deliberate and hope the distinctive handwriting might be recognized, sources told CBS.

CBS also reported that the anthrax death of Kathy Nguyen of New York still remains mysterious, and the FBI has put up posters seeking help from the public. The FBI no longer believes that the 61-year-old Vietnamese immigrant, who lived alone, came in contact with anthrax through cross-contaminated mail.
