Florida Governor gets suspicious letter

MIAMI, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Preliminary tests showed Thursday that a suspicious envelope containing a powdery substance sent to Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a younger brother of the president, does not contain anthrax.

Final tests have not been completed on the envelope that was discovered at a Tallahassee, Fla., post office and immediately turned over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The envelope never reached the governor or the State Capitol, and Bush said he was most concerned about postal workers who may have handled the envelope.

"The envelope was received by the Tallahassee post office," Jeb Bush said. "It had the block lettering that has become so infamous that was sent to NBC and the other networks.

"It had extra postage, which is another trait of the letters sent to New York. And there was apparently a powdery substance in the envelope," said the governor, who was visiting Miami when he disclosed the existence of the letter.

He said the letter was tested by the state agriculture department because the health department is overwhelmed with other anthrax testing requirements.
