Police chopper caught on doughnut run

ALBUQUERQUE, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- The crew of an Albuquerque police helicopter faced possible disciplinary action Friday after being caught making a midnight doughnut run.

The two were seen landing the Kiowa OH58 patrol helicopter about 12:30 a.m. Thursday at a Krispy Kreme shop. They went inside and then returned to the chopper with a box of doughnuts, according to a witness who was taking a smoke break nearby.

"I just think that's wrong," Keith Turner told the Albuquerque Tribune. "My tax dollars don't pay for that."

The midnight doughnut run did not please the chopper crew's supervisor either.

"Their sergeant is going to be interviewing them to find out what the hell they were thinking," Lt. Bob Huntsman told the newspaper.

Huntsman said the incident would be investigated and the two would be disciplined, if necessary.

The flight officer, a sworn police officer, and the pilot, a civilian contractor, were not identified.

The helicopter was on a routine nightly patrol of the city when the incident occurred.

Huntsman said the department has worked too hard to build a professional unit to allow one incident destroy it. He said police have tried to put down the doughnut stereotype for years.

"It's not like they landed at a health food store," he said.
