CASABLANCA, Morocco, July 9 (UPI) -- Top seeded Marlene Weingartner of Germany suffered first round elimination Tuesday at the hands of unheralded Anastassia Radionova of Russia at the claycourt Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse.
Radionova crushed Weingartner 6-1, 6-0 in less than 45 minutes of play.
No. 2 Angeles Montolio of Spain gave somewhat of a better effort, but came up short at the end of a three set battle against unseeded Gisela Dulko of Argentina, 2-6, 6-2, 1-6.
Other seeded players to bow out Tuesday were sixth and eighth seeded Austrians Patricia Wartusch and Evelyn Fauth. Katalin Marosi of Hungary dispatched Wartusch 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), while Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic eased past Fauth, 6-3, 6-4.
Defending champion and No. 7 Zsofia Gubacsi of Hungary avoided the early exit with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 win over Maria Wolfbrandt of Sweden. Gubacsi earned her only career WTA Tour title here last year over Maria Elena Camerin of Italy.
No. 5 Conchita Martinez-Granados also advanced with a 6-3, 6-0 win against American Tiffany Dabek; Cindy Watson of Australia had no trouble against local Meryem Haddad, 6-3, 6-0; Romanian Edina Gallovits topped Lubomira Kurhajcova of the Czech Republic, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5); American Kristina Brandi beat Valentina Sassi of Italy, 6-3, 6-2; Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia went on with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 triumph against compatriot Maria Kondratieva; and Maria Eve Pelletier of Canada edged Feriel Esseghir of Algeria, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
