NASHVILLE, July 21 (UPI) -- The Tennessee Titans released star running back Eddie George Wednesday, two days after he turned down a contract proposal and asked to be traded.
George, the 1995 Heisman Trophy winner, is Tennessee's all-time leading rusher with 10,009 yards. He was under contract through the 2006 season and would have earned $4.25 million this season.
Following the 2003 season, the Titans asked George to rework his contract and paid him a $1 million roster bonus.
George has said that Philadelphia, Tampa Bay and Dallas are possibilities for future employment.
He gained 1,031 yards and five touchdowns in 2003. George has had arthroscopic surgeries on his right knee and left ankle since last season.
