Time runs out for unclaimed $1 million lottery prize

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- The Indiana Lottery announced the clock has run out for a $1 million winning Powerball ticket purchased in April.

Stephanie McFarland, a spokeswoman for the Indiana Lottery, said the 180-day window has passed for whoever purchased the winning ticket at the Circle K store in Jeffersonville April 10 and the ticket is now worthless, CNN reported Wednesday.

"It is rare, but not unheard of, that a prize of such magnitude goes unclaimed," McFarland said.

McFarland said the largest unclaimed prize in the state was a $50 million Powerball jackpot that expired in 2002.

The unclaimed prize money is retained by the state.
