Top-ranked Rafael Nadal announced Tuesday that he is pulling out of next week's Swiss Indoors in Switzerland due to a knee injury.

Nadal said in a Facebook post that he was examined by a doctor in his native Spain and was advised to take time off to give himself a chance to heal.

"I am suffering from an over stressing of the knee and the problems were already present at the tournament in Shanghai," Nadal wrote.

The Swiss Indoors in Basel was viewed as a big event as it is played in the home country of second-seeded Roger Federer.

Nadal and Federer are once again the top two players on the ATP tour and just squared off in Sunday's final in Shanghai with Federer prevailing for the fifth straight meeting.

"I want to send a special message to the many tennis fans in Switzerland which have always showed great support and respect also on my matches with Roger," Nadal said. "Hope to see you next year."

Federer is expected to become the No. 1 seed for the event due to Nadal's withdrawal. Federer will be seeking his eighth Swiss Indoors title.
