South Africa's Kevin Anderson pounded 21 aces, the last one completing a big upset in the second round of the Citi Open, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (7) over top-seeded Dominic Thiem of Austria on Thursday in Washington. The match lasted 2 hours, 46 minutes, and a three-hour rain delay was thrown in, too.

After neither player broke serve in the second set, the third set featured three consecutive breaks as Thiem went ahead 4-3. Anderson broke back for 5-5.
Thiem had a match point at 5-6 in the third-set tiebreaker but couldn't convert. Anderson sealed the win on his second match point.
In other second-round action, second-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan beat 13th-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina 6-4, 7-5. Third-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada topped Cyprus' Marcos Baghdatis 7-6 (7), 6-3, but fourth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria fell 6-4, 6-2 to Daniil Medvedev of Russia.
Fifth-seeded German Alexander Zverev got past American Tennys Sandgren 7-5, 7-5. Eighth-seeded Jack Sock dumped Jared Donaldson 7-6 (6), 6-2 in an all-American matchup.
American Tommy Paul upset 11th-seeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-3, while qualifier Yuki Bhambri of India defeated Guido Pella of Argentina 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1.
The quarterfinal matchups are Anderson vs. Bhambri, Raonic vs. Sock, Zverev vs. Medvedev, and Paul vs. Nishikori.
