Stan Wawrinka, Nick Kyrgios advance at French Open

Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland brushed aside a challenge from Slovakian qualifier Jozef Kovalik in a 6-2, 7-6(6), 6-3 victory to advance to the second round of the French Open on Tuesday at Roland Garros.

The third-seeded Wawrinka encountered some resistance in the second set as Kovalik led 2-0, but the qualifier was unable to convert three straight set points with a 6/3 edge in the tie-breaker.

Wawrinka, ranked No. 3 in the ATP Rankings, finished off Kovalik in one hour and 57 minutes. He improved to 20-8 on the season and has never lost to a player outside the Top 50 in the ATP Rankings at the Open.

Wawrinka faces Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov in the next round after Dolgopolov beat Argentina's Carlos Berlocq 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 10 minutes. Dolgopolov is 2-1 in head-to-head matches with Wawrinka.

Eighteenth-seeded Nick Kyrgios also moved on after getting into a spat with the umpire in the second set. Kyrgios defeated Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 and moves on to face South Africa's Kevin Anderson, who beat Tunisia's Malek Jaziri 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

The 19th-ranked Kyrgios disputed the chair umpire's ruling when a call went against him as he had a break point for 5-4. He fired 20 aces in the match.

"I served really well today at important times in the match, and I thought I just played the right style of game to win today with what I had," Kyrgios said. "Hopefully, I can keep going."

Playing in his first Open match in five years, Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro, a 29th seed, defeated fellow countryman and qualifier Guido Pella 6-2, 6-1, 6-4. He faces the winner of the match between Cyprus' Marcos Baghdatis or Spain's Nicolas Almagro in the next round.

"(This) is an amazing tournament for Argentinian people, and I'm loving playing this tournament again after five years," del Potro said.
