Top-seeded Gael Monfils advances to quartefinals at Marseille

Top-seeded Gael Monfils advanced to the quarterfinals by posting a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ukraine qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky on Thursday at the Open 13 in Marseille, France.

Monfils needed just 57 minutes to dispose of Stakhovsky. The 30-year-old Frenchman will face fellow countryman Richard Gasquet, who is seeded sixth, in the quarterfinals.

Second-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, also of France, recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Illya Marchenko of Ukraine. Tsonga delivered nine aces and wrapped up the match in 81 minutes.

Tsonga, 31, is looking for his second consecutive title. He won the crown at last week's World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Tsonga faces fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon, the seventh seed, in the quarterfinals.

Slovakian qualifier Norbert Gombos stunned Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (5) and will challenge defending champion Nick Kyrgios in the quarterfinals. The Australian is seeded third.

Russia's Daniil Medvedev ousted Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (3) and will face fourth-seeded Lucas Pouille of France in the quarterfinals.
