Burgos, thanks to his 11th consecutive win in the Quito event, moves on to a second-round match Thursday against top-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia.

Burgos, a Dominican player ranked 156th in the world, never won another ATP event other than the Quito clay-court tournament. He lost to Australia's Bernard Tomic in the second round of the Australian Open last month, his only other event this year.

All other action Wednesday was part of the second round.

Fourth-seeded Tomaz Bellucci of Brazil barely squeaked past wild-card entrant Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 7-6 (8), 7-6 (2).

Eighth-seeded Renzo Olivo of Argentina needed three sets to eliminate Colombia's Santiago Giraldo 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3.

Spanish qualifier Roberto Carballes Baena knocked out Ecuadorian wild card Giovanni Lapentti 6-3, 6-4.

Bellucci opposes Olivo in the quarterfinals.
