Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Danish forward Anders Dreyer scored twice in the second half to fuel an upset victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy in the first MLS match in San Diego FC franchise history.
Dreyer scored in the 52nd minute and stoppage time of the 2-0 triumph Sunday at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif.
"The most important thing is that the boys showed conviction for what we've been working on all preseason," San Diego FC coach Mikey Varas told reporters.
"They showed the quality that they have. I think they did a fantastic thing."
The MLS newcomers and reigning champions played a scoreless first half. Forward Irving Lozano then teamed up with Dreyer to provide the first MLS goal in San Diego FC history.
Galaxy goalie Novak Micovic triggered the score by firing a heavy pass to defender Carlos Emiro Garces, who struggled to control the feed.
The ball went off the defender's boot and landed near Lozano, who quickly hit a cross through the box. Dreyer finished the play with a one-touch strike into the middle of the net.
He logged his brace off a breakaway in the final minutes. Forward Tomas Angel Gutierrez first took off down the middle of the pitch, racing defenders toward the net.
He caught up to a pass just above the box and dribbled away from several defenders. He then laced a pass between the opposition, finding Dreyer toward the far post. The San Diego FC striker again used his first touch to rope a shot off the crossbar and past Micovic.
San Diego FC will host St. Louis SC at 10:30 p.m. EST Saturday in San Diego. The Galaxy will meet the Vancouver Whitecaps at 10 p.m. Sunday in Vancouver.
