Sources told The Athletic, El Comercio and El Universo that Roberto Cabezas, Angulo's former youth team teammate, and another man were killed in the crash. Angulo sustained head and lung injuries and was placed in a coma before his death.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Marco -- a husband and father, a brother and son, a friend and teammate," FC Cincinnati said in a news release. "He was a joyful, kind young man who lit up every room he entered. Our entire club grieves this tragedy, and we are thinking of and praying for his family.

"He was a cherished member of the FC Cincinnati family, and he will be missed."

Angulo, who is survived by a wife and son, went on loan in March from FC Cincinnati to Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito. He made 11 appearances for the Ecuadorian Serie A club. He made 24 appearances for FC Cincinnati. The defensive midfielder also played for Ecuadorian Serie A club Independiente del Valle. He made two appearances for Ecuador's senior national team.

"Marco was not only an outstanding player, but also a great teammate," the Ecuadorian Football Association said. "He leaves a deep pain in our hearts, especially in all of us who shared countless trips, rallies and games with him.

"We join in solidarity with his family, colleagues and loved ones, wishing them strength in this difficult time. Rest in peace, Angulito."
