Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Manchester City midfielder Rodri sustained a torn ACL in his right knee against Arsenal and will miss the rest of the season.

Sources told ESPN, Marca and CBS on Monday that tests revealed the torn ACL. Rodri limped off the field in the 21st minute of the Sky Blues' 2-2 draw with the Gunners on Sunday at Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England.

Rodri is expected to undergo surgery on the knee in Barcelona. He did not log a goal or assist in his first two Premier League appearances this season.

The 28-year-old, who joined the Sky Blues in 2019, is one of the favorites to win 2024 Ballon d'Or honors. Rodri finished fifth in voting for last year's Ballon d'Or, which is presented annually by France Football magazine to the best soccer player in the world.

The Sky Blues will host Watford in an EFL Cup match at 2:45 p.m. EDT Tuesday in Manchester. They will take on Newcastle in a Premier League match Sept. 28 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
