Inter Miami signs free agent goalie Luis Robles

Dec. 3 (UPI) -- David Beckham's Major League Soccer club Inter Miami have signed free agent goalkeeper Luis Robles.

The club announced the signing Monday. Inter Miami begins play in March, launching their inaugural season. Robles, 35, spent the last eight seasons with the New York Red Bulls.

"Luis has had a storied MLS career and we are excited that it will continue in Miami," Inter Miami sporting director Paul McDonough said in a statement. "We look forward to his contributions ahead of our inaugural MLS season."

Inter Miami also announced the signing of defender A.J. DeLaGarza. Robles and DeLaGarza join a squad including: Julian Carranza, Jerome Kiesewetter, George Acosta, Luis Argudo, Jay Chapman, Lee Nguyen, David Norman Jr., Matias Pellegrini, Victor Ulloa, Mikey Ambrose, Grant Lillard, Christian Makoun, Alvas Powell, Ben Sweat and Bryan Meredith.

"I'm really excited to be a part of this organization and this family and as we get ready for our inaugural season, I hope that as the season draws near the excitement just continues to get bigger and bigger," Robles told InterMiamiCF.com. "This organization is putting together a roster that is going to be competitive, that is going to be ambitious, and is going to wear the jersey with pride."

Robles won the Supporters Shield with the Red Bulls in 2013, 2015 and 2018. He was MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2015. Robles started 238 MLS regular-season contests for the Red Bulls. He had 72 clean sheets. Robles had a club-record 14 clean sheets last season. He holds the MLS record with 183 consecutive starts. Robles has also made three appearances for the United States Men's National Team.

Inter Miami has their first home game against the Los Angeles Galaxy at 2:30 p.m. EST Saturday, March 14 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
