CSKA Moscow shuts out Real Madrid in Champions League

Dec. 12 (UPI) -- CSKA Moscow beat Real Madrid 3-0 in a group stage finale in the Champions League on Wednesday at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.

The La Liga power and reigning Champions League winners started a young lineup as they had already clinched a spot in the round of 16.

Fyodor Chalov put the road squad ahead 1-0 in the 37th minute. The Russian striker collected a feed from Arnor Sigurdsson during the sequence before chipping a left-footed shot into the far-post netting to beat Madrid's Thibaut Courtois.

Midfielder Georgi Schennikov volleyed in a sky-high deflection for CSKA Moscow's second tally in the 43rd minute. The Russian squad held the 2-0 lead through the halftime whistle.

Sigurdsson got himself on the scoresheet in the 73rd minute, pocketing CSKA Moscow's final score. Croatian star Nikola Vlasic passed back to Sigurdsson on that play while his back was turned toward the goal. The Icelandic star used his first touch to blast a shot past Courtois.

Despite getting the 3-0 victory, Viktoria Plzen's win against Roma pushed it past CSKA Moscow for a spot int he Europa League.

The Champions League round of 16 draw is on Monday in Switzerland. Madrid battles Rayo Vallecano in La Liga at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in Madrid.
