Granit Xhaka: Swiss midfielder rips deep screamer vs. Serbia at World Cup

June 22 (UPI) -- Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka blasted in a 25-yard shot against Serbia in a Group E clash at the World Cup Friday in Kaliningrad, Russia.

The goal sparked Switzerland's comeback in the 2-1 win at Kaliningrad Stadium. Switzerland trailed 1-0 after a goal in the fifth minute from Serbia's Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Serbia took the 1-0 advantage into the half before Xhaka struck.

The Arsenal star hovered near midfielder as Switzerland was looking to tie the game. Xherdan Shaqiri attempted a rip from the right side, but it was blocked by a defender. The ball rolled out of the box finding an oncoming Xhaka.

He connected with a powerful right footed strike, sending the ball into the far post netting and badly beating Serbian keeper Vladimir Stojkovic.

Shaqiri added Switzerland's game winner in the 90th minute.

Xhaka scored just once last season for Arsenal. He scored twice during the 2016-17 season for the Gunners.

The 25-year-old has made 65 appearances for Switzerland's senior team since his debut in 2011. Xhaka has 10 goals during his international soccer tenure.
