World Cup: Denmark, Australia end in a draw

SAMARA, Russia -- Denmark and Australia fought to the finish, but neither could manage an edge.

Instead, their Group C match in front of 40,727 Thursday at the FIFA World Cup in Russia ended in a 1-1 tie.

Denmark's midfielder Christian Eriksen opened the scoring with a goal in the seventh minute. In the 38th minute, Danish forward Yussuf Poulsen touched the ball in the penalty area and, after seeing a video replay, the referee pointed to the spot. Australia's Mile Jedinak then netted the equalizer.

It was Jedinak's second goal of the tournament.

Denmark and Australia have now faced each other four times, with Denmark winning twice. Thursday's match was their first draw.

Denmark currently leads Group C with four points. France is second with three points (after one match) and Australia is third with one point. Peru played one match and lost.

Denmark next faces France on Tuesday in Moscow. Australia meets Peru, also Tuesday, in Sochi.
