World Cup: Croatia stuns Messi, Argentina to advance

June 21 (UPI) -- Croatia stunned Argentina 3-0 on Thursday in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, to advance to the round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1998.

Croatia's goals were scored by Ante Rebic (53rd minute), Luka Modric (80th minute) and Ivan Rakitic (90th minute).

Croatia scored six points in two matches in Group D, and reached the knockout round of the championship ahead of schedule.

Group A members Russia and Uruguay, along with Group C's France, have already secured places in the round of 16.

Iceland (1 point) and Nigeria (0 points), which also compete in Group D, play a match in Volgograd on Friday.

Croatia will play against Iceland in the final match of the group stage in Rostov-on-Don on June 26. On the same day, Argentina and Nigeria will have a game in St. Petersburg.
