Tottenham Hotspur extend Mauricio Pochettino's contract

May 24 (UPI) -- Tottenham Hotspur announced a five-year extension for coach Mauricio Pochettino on Thursday.

Pochettino, 46, began his tenure as Spurs manager in 2014. He is now signed until 2023.

"I am honored to have signed a new long-term contract as we approach one of the most significant periods in the Club's history and be the manager that will lead this team into our new world-class stadium," Pochettino told the team website.

"This is just one of the factors that makes this one of the most exciting jobs in world football and we are already making plans to ensure we continue to build on the great work that everyone has contributed to over the past four years."

Spurs finished in fifth place in the Premier League after Pochettino's first season with the club. Tottenham ranked in the top three in the following campaigns.

Pochettino's squad finished third in the Premier League, posing a 23-8-7 record this season, trailing Manchester City and Manchester United.

The club faces AS Roma in the International Champions Cup at 10 p.m. July 25 at SDCCU Stadium in San Diego, Calif. Spurs lost to Juventus in the Champions League round of 16 and fell to Manchester United in the FA Cup semifinals.

"I am delighted that we have agreed a new, extended contract with Mauricio," Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said. "We have been on an extraordinary journey and the times ahead look even more exciting as the Club enters the next phase in its history. Mauricio has fostered an incredible spirit in the team and has embraced a style of play our fans have loved watching. I know they will welcome this commitment by Mauricio."

Tottenham also signed first team coaching staff Jesus Perez, Miguel D'Agostino and Toni Jimenez to new contract with the club.
