Mesut Özil calls London 'home,' fueling Arsenal speculation

By Alex Butler

Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Star midfielder Mesut Özil excited Arsenal fans by posting a photo of his "home" in London.

Fans are hoping the Premier League power locks down the German with a contract extension during the transfer window, which closes on Jan. 31.

"#myhome #M1Ö #logo #London," Özil wrote for the caption on a photo Monday, which he posted to his social media accounts.

The photo featured Özil standing above a staircase in his home, pointing at his signature logo on one of his walls. He geotagged the photo in London.

Özil, 29, has been linked to Manchester United in transfer rumors.

He posted another photo this week, calling himself a tourist while riding the London Underground.

"Doing this tourist thing today," Özil posted Monday. "Keep calm and mind the gap. #London #Underground."

Özil began his senior career in 2006 for Schalke 04. He played for Werder Bremen from 2008 to 2010 and Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, before joining the Gunners. He was also part of Germany's 2014 World Cup winning squad.

The German watched star teammate Alexis Sanchez flee in a transfer to Manchester United, which was confirmed on Monday. Arsenal gained Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the swap.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger was asked last week if Özil would still be with the team in February.

"In February? Yes, of course," Wenger told reporters, according to the team website.

He said Tuesday that Özil and Mkhitaryan can play together.

"Mkhitaryan can play on the wing or in midfield, so I believe he can play very well in many positions." Wenger said Sunday. "That can help us as well because he can play together with Özil as well as playmaker, so overall it's a good move."

The Gunners beat Crystal Palace 4-1 on Saturday in a Premier League scuffle at Emirates Stadium in London. Arsenal hosts Chelsea at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Özil has four goals in 19 appearances this season. He was the player of the season in 2015-2016 for Arsenal and earned his third Emirates FA Cup in May. The German has 27 goals and 48 assists in 135 career Premier League appearances.
