Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard scored twice to save a draw against Burnley Tuesday at Old Trafford.

Burnley and Manchester United tied 2-2 in the Premier League bout.

The visitors drew first blood when Ashley Barnes netted a goal in the third minute. Burnley took a 2-0 edge on Steven Defour's score in the 36th minute. Manchester United went into the locker room at halftime without a goal.

But Lingard emerged as the soccer savior after subbing into the match in the 46th minute for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Winger Ashley Young dribbled down the right side before firing a low cross into the box early in the second frame. Lingard managed to back-heel the ball into the net, past English keeper Nick Pope in the 53rd minute.

Lingard returned for a more sensational strike in stoppage time. The midfielder fired in that shot from about 15 yards out. Manchester United star Marcus Rashford took a free kick to start the sequence, before the bouncing ball settled on Lingard's right boot.

He fired a shot into the right side of the net, not even giving Young a chance to react.

"At 2-0, it makes things more difficult at halftime," Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said, according to the team website. "I need my players to believe in themselves and in me. But I'm very happy with their character."

United hosts Southampton in another Premier League matchup at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Old Trafford.

"In the second half, it was impossible to concede a goal -- impossible -- because they didn't cross the midfield line, they didn't have two or three passes in a row," Mourinho said. "So, the second half was really ours -- totally ours -- but we still only scored two goals. I'm very happy with their character and part of that was also the way they played and tried to break down a very organized wall. I keep saying that to defend well is a quality and they defended very well. So also credit to Burnley to concede only two goals against such strong pressure."
