Bournemouth's Jermain Defoe scores from impossible angle, disses England for World Cup snub

By Alex Butler

Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Jermain Defoe netted a world-class goal Saturday in Bournemouth's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.

After the game, he referenced his snub from England's 2014 World Cup squad. That national team was managed by Roy Hodgson, who now coaches Crystal Palace.

He made the comments while discussing his game-tying goal.

"He is a top goalkeeper," Defoe said, according to the BBC. "It was a key moment in the game for us. But he was brilliant."

Defoe scored goal No. 200 and No. 201 in his Premier League career during the match.

After the game, he was doing his interview with the BBC, when Hodgson walked by him in the tunnel and said "still scoring them!."

"He [Hodgson] still left me out of the World Cup though, didn't he. At the end of the day, he has a good team," Defoe said.

Well, you can close the betting for the goal of the month for December! 😂 @Iamjermaindefoe that was special!! #afcb 🍒

The 35-year-old scored his first goal in the 10th minute, putting Bournemouth up 1-0 on Crystal Palace. Luka Millivojevic and Scott Dann put in goals after the 41st minute to give Palace a first half edge.

Defoe's best strike came in stoppage time before the break. At about the 47:30 mark, the striker received a long feed from the midfield. He ran the right flank before watching the pass bounce in front of him from about 15 yards away from goal. He then struck the ball with his right foot, blasting it over the head of Palace keeper Julian Speroni and into the far post netting, scoring from an impossible angle.

Defoe played on England's World Cup squad in 2010 in South Africa before the 2014 snub. He told Sky Sports in November that he wants to play for his country next summer in Russia.

"In a World Cup year, you always want to do well for your club because it is based on merit," Defoe told Sky Sports. "To get into a squad, you have got to be playing well for your club, it's as simple as that. As a forward, you have got to be scoring goals to get into the squad."

"I think having played in a World Cup, having had that experience, not just the games, the build-up and being at the hotel with the team, just everything involved in being at a World Cup is so special."

Defoe and Bournemouth face Manchester United at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Premier League action at Old Trafford.
