Robert Lewandowski becomes Poland's all-time leading scorer with hat-trick

Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski has the most goals in the history of Polish soccer after netting a hat-trick.

Lewandowski scored his three goals on Thursday in a 6-1 win against Armenia in a World Cup qualifier at Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium in Armenia.

The 29 year old captain for Poland slipped by the country's former leading scorer, Wlodzimierz Lubanski. Lubanski netted 48 goals for the country.

Lewandowski first struck with a free kick in the 18th minute, matching Lubanski's mark. He scored for a second time on an indirect free kick in the 24th minute. Lewandowski scored his third goal in the 63rd minute when he followed a shot for a tap-in.

He now has 15 goals in the World Cup qualifying cycle, one more than Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo. Lewandowski also has 24 goals in his last 14 qualifier games for Poland.

He has played 90 games for Poland. He is the first player to score 15 times in a European qualifying campaign.

Poland can qualify for Russia's 2018 World Cup if Montenegro draws with Denmark. Denmark was leading that game 1-0 Thursday at Podgorica City Stadium after 46 minutes.
