Diego Costa: Chelsea trades striker to Atletico Madrid

Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Diego Costa is joining Atletico Madrid after Chelsea agreed to a transfer for the Spanish striker.

Both clubs announced the transaction on Thursday. The transfer is subject to the agreement of personal terms and a medical, according to Chelsea.

Costa, 28, had 58 goals and 24 assists in 120 games at Chelsea. He will sign a contract with Atletico through June of 2021, according to El Mundo. Atletico will pay about $65.6 million in addition to about $12 million in variables in the deal, according to El Munda.

Chelsea has authorized Costa to travel to Madrid in the coming days to have medical tests and settle his contract with his new club, according to Atletico.

Costa cannot officially register with Atletico until Jan. 1, as that is the date when the Spanish transfer window re-opens. Chelsea is currently under the FIFA transfer ban. The striker originally joined Chelsea from Atletico in 2014. He won the Premier League twice with the Blues.

"A great striker & always a support when I arrived at @ChelseaFC," Costa's Chelsea teammate Michy Batshuayi tweeted. "Thanks for everything Crazy @diegocosta & good luck for the future."

Costa has not appeared in a game yet this year, but scored 21 goals and had seven assists in 39 games last year for Chelsea. He scored 36 goals and had four assists in his final season with Atletico in 2013.

Costa scored 64 goals in 135 games for Atletico Madrid before his move to the Premier League.
