Karim Benzema: Real Madrid signs forward until 2021

Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Karim Benzema is now signed with Real Madrid until June 30, 2021.

Real Madrid announced the contract extension on Wednesday. Benzema will speak to the media at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Santiago Bernabéu. The 29-year-old has 181 goals in 371 games since joining Real Madrid in 2009.

Real Madrid also signed manager Zinedine Zidane to a new contract. A source told AS that Benzema will make about $8.9 million annually and the deal has a release clause of more than $1.1 billion.

Benzema joined Madrid from Lyon on a $41 million deal. That deal was set to expire in 2019. The French forward has a goal and an assist in nine matches this year for Real Madrid. He had 19 goals and seven assists in 38 matches last year and 29 goals and seven assists for Madrid in 2015.

"Proud and happy to remain part of this beautiful adventure in the best club in the world @KBNueve2021 #realmadrid," Benzema tweeted Wednesday.

Benzema has won 14 trophies while with Real Madrid. He is a three-time Champions League winner and two-time La Liga champ during his tenure with the Spanish soccer power. Benzema is currently dealing with a hamstring injury and is expected to miss another month. He posted a video of his workouts Monday on Twitter, saying that he is working hard and will be back soon.
