March 29 (UPI) -- Futbol fans around the globe were mocking one the sports brightest stars Wednesday after a bronze statue of his likeness was unveiled at the airport of his namesake.

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo had his bust revealed at Cristiano Ronaldo Airport, formerly known as Madeira International Airport.

Twitter exploded with negativity regarding the new memorial, which looks nothing like the sensational scorer. Several users were even trying to find out whom the statue actually does look like. Critics on social media called the bust "horrifying."

Some even edited photos, placing the bust on Ronaldo's shoulders, to show just how off the portrayal is.

Ronaldo also has a statue, supposedly in his likeness, standing outside of his museum in Funchal. Real's leading scorer will return to the pitch Sunday against Alaves in La Liga action.

Portugal's president and the prime minister flew to the island for Wednesday's unveiling ceremony.

Ronaldo, 32, also has a hotel for his namesake. The four-time Player of the Year has appeared a record 138 times for Portugal and scored a team-high 71 goals.
