LA Galaxy defeats Real Salt Lake for first win

By The Sports Xchange

The LA Galaxy came back from a goal down to get its first win of the season, a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake in an MLS match on Saturday night in Sandy, Utah.

Real Salt Lake, which dropped to 0-2-1, scored the first goal at the 18-minute mark when Yura Movsisyan took an assist from Albert Rusnak and got the ball past goaltender Clement Diop.

Salt Lake played with only 10 men after the 44-minute mark, when Kyle Beckerman was given a red flag for unsporting behavior.

The Galaxy, now 1-2, tied the game at the 69-minute mark when Dave Romney left-footed a cross pass from Romain Alessandrini into the net. Romney, who missed last week's loss against Portland because of a suspension, had two shots on goal.

The Galaxy took the lead when Alessandrini set up another score, this one by Emmanuel Boateng, at the 74-minute mark. Boateng has five goals in his MLS career in the regular season and playoffs, with all of them coming against Real Salt Lake.

Both the goals came against goaltender Nick Rimando, who saved two other shots on goal.

The loss of Beckerman was compounded by four players not being able to play for Real Salt Lake entering the match because of injury, most notably designated player Joao Plata with a hip contusion.

The Galaxy managed the victory despite the absence of center back and captain Jelle Van Damme, out because of a suspension after receiving a red card against Portland.

Rusnak attempted two shots on goal for Real Salt Lake, both saved by Diop.

The Galaxy improved to 7-3-7 at Real Salt Lake's Rio Tinto Stadium. They lead the all-time series 14-12-8.
