GENOA, Italy, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Dynamic defender Dani Alves covered his face with his hands and curled into the fetal position Sunday during Juventus' 3-1 loss to Genoa.

Alves, 33, fractured his left fibula during the match. Initial examinations suggested that he will "face a lengthy spell on the sidelines," according to the Sun. The Brazilian went down after a challenge on Lucas Ocampos.

He was carried off of the field with less than 15 minutes remaining in the Serie A match.

"Juventus pair Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci have undergone preliminary medical examinations after they were withdrawn prematurely from Sunday's match against Genoa," Juventus said in a statement. "The former was immediately taken to hospital where it was revealed that the Brazilian had fractured the fibula of his left leg. Bonucci meanwhile was taken off after straining the flexor muscles in his thigh. The respective conditions of both players will continue to be monitored in the coming days."

Alves thanked his fans for their support on Instagram.

"Thank you all for the messages of support and affection, unfortunately our profession being a profession of risk these types of accidents happen."

"I would also like to clarify to all my friends and family that it is not as serious being reported on the internet."

"I will be back soon as always, living my profession with the dedication that has led me to achieve a solid career and many successes."

"Thank you very much for your kindness."

Alves has one goal in eight Serie A appearances this season. Juventus battles Atalanta at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 at Juventus Stadium.
