Neymar to be first player to wear Michael Jordan soccer shoe

By Alex Butler

NEW YORK, June 1 (UPI) -- Michael Jordan might have been the best on the basketball court, but his shoe sales are absolutely second to none.

Now the global icon is trying his shooter's touch on the soccer pitch, using Brazilian soccer star Neymar to model new Jordan brand boots.

Neymar will be the first soccer player ever to wear Jordan's Jumpman boot. The shoes are inspired by the Jordan V sneaker. His kicks will have Jordan's No. 23 on one foot and Neymar's No. 10 on the other. The 'Jumpman' logo, the Brazilian flag, and the initials of Neymar's son, will also be displayed.

Nike plans to release a street edition of the shoes with 'Neymar' inside the tongue.

"Michael Jordan and Neymar Jr. share a mutual respect that transcends sports, countries, and languages," Nike.com says. "Neymar Jr. grew up a fan of the man and the brand, while Jordan appreciates Neymar Jr.'s style on and off the pitch. Now, as part of a unique Nike/Jordan collaboration, Neymar Jr. becomes the first football (soccer) athlete to feature the Jumpman on his performance product. Additionally, the Jordan Brand will release a Neymar edition of the Jordan V Low with "Neymar" stitched inside the tongue."

The tongue-less soccer cleats feature a completely reflective upper and Nike Swoosh.

"Michael Jordan set the standard for greatness," Neymar Jr. told Nike.com. "He's an incredible competitor and a champion. I've always admired him, so to collaborate with him and have his icon on my boots means a great deal to me."

Neymar will wear the NJR X JORDAN Hypervenom on the field in August when playing for Brazil. The shoes went on sale June 1 on the Nike Football App and are available June 3 on Nike.com.
