USMNT legend Landon Donovan announces birth of child

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- His goal in life is no longer scoring goals.

Retired U.S. men's national team forward Landon Donovan announced the birth of a baby boy Wednesday on Twitter.

"The greatest joy and most love I've ever experienced," Donovan wrote on Twitter. "Welcome to the world Talon Bartell Donovan."

Donovan, 33, included a photo of himself with his wife Hannah Bartell and Talon.

I've been fortunate to achieve a lot of wonderful things in my life but nothing comes close to being a father. Welcome to the world Talon Bartell Donovan ❤️💛💚

Donovan posted a photo to his Facebook in September, revealing Bartell's pregnancy.

"Been keeping a secret for months now," Donovan posted. "Daddy flipflops, mommy flipflops..........baby flipflops."

Donovan and Bartell married in May in San Diego. He announced his retirement from professional soccer in August of 2014.

In his USMNT career, Donovan scored 57 goals, had 58 assists, 12 FIFA World Cup appearances and five World Cup goals. Donovan scored 144 goals from 2001 to 2014 for the San Jose Earthquakes and Los Angeles Galaxy. In 2008, Donovan scored 20 goals and had nine assists in 23 starts.
