The Kentucky Derby through the years(55 images)

Known for mint juleps, bold fashion and wagering, the Kentucky Derby horse race at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., is the longest-running sporting event in the United States, first held in 1875. After being postponed a few months with limited attendance in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Derby is back on for Saturday. Here's a look back through the history of the event.

The clubhouses and grandstands were all but empty aside from working staff, owners, and their families prior to the 2020 Kentucky Derby, held amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was postponed from its usual May date to September 4. Photo by Michelle Haas Hutchins/UPI | License Photo
