Montreal Canadiens star goalie Carey Price likely to miss start of season

Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price likely won't be available for next week's season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Canadiens head coach Dominique Ducharme told reporters Wednesday that Price is "not doing well right now" as he continues to recover from a non-COVID-19 illness. The star goalie also underwent off-season surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

Price isn't expected to practice before the start of the 2021-22 NHL season because of the illness, making it unlikely that he'll be ready in time for the opener at Toronto.

Ducharme said the Canadiens will ease Price back into the lineup once he fully recovers. The coach also noted that defenseman Joel Edmundson will be out two to three weeks with an undisclosed injury.

The 34-year-old Price, who helped guide the Canadiens to their first Stanley Cup Final in 28 years last season, had a 12-7-5 record with a 2.64 goals-against average and .901 save percentage in the 2020-21 campaign.

The Canadiens are scheduled to open their season Oct. 13 against the Maple Leafs.
