July 13 (UPI) -- The Stanley Cup is headed to Montreal -- for repairs -- after it was damaged during the Tampa Bay Lightning's championship celebration, a team spokesman said.

A fan posted a screenshot of the damaged Stanley Cup on social media Monday, which showed the top bowl the trophy bent out of its round shape.

A team spokesperson told WFLA-TV, The Athletic and ESPN that the trophy will be sent to Montreal for repairs and later returned for additional celebrations.

The Lightning won the cup last week in a 4-1 series victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

Lightning players and fans celebrated the NHL championship with a boat parade in Tampa, Fla., on Monday. The trophy did not appear to be damaged in footage captured on the water.

NHL teams use a traveling Stanley Cup, a replica of the real trophy, for championship celebrations. The original Stanley Cup stays at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

The traveling Stanley Cup was also damaged in 2008, and that dent was hammered out by hand.

Each member of the winning team, including coaches, players and staff members, gets one day to spend with the Stanley Cup during the off-season. The Hockey Hall of Fame's Keepers of the Cup travel with the trophy to keep it clean and ensure its safety.
