March 2 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Penguins captain and star forward Sidney Crosby was placed on the NHL's COVID-19 protocols list, forcing him to miss Tuesday night's game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

"He will be listed on the NHL's COVID protocol list," Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters earlier Tuesday. "We didn't have a morning skate this morning due to the NHL's COVID protocol."

"... As I said to our players, we can do all the right things and this kind of stuff could happen. But there's protocols put in place for a reason. We will do our very best to adhere to the protocols and control what we can to give ourselves the best chance to win."

Crosby is one of just three players currently in the league's COVID-19 protocol, according to the league. Nashville Predators forward Ryan Johansen and San Jose Sharks star Tomas Hertl are the only others in the protocol.

The 33-year-old Crosby leads the Penguins in scoring with seven goals and 11 assists in 20 games this season. He was held without a goal or assist in the Penguins' 2-0 loss to the New York Islanders on Sunday.
