Jan. 31 (UPI) -- The New York Rangers have placed defenseman Tony DeAngelo on waivers, the team announced Sunday. The surprising move comes after the Rangers signed DeAngelo to a two-year, $9.6 million contract extension in October.
"This isn't about one incident, it's not about one thing," Rangers head coach David Quinn told reporters Sunday. "This is a situation that the organization felt was best at this current time, and we'll see how the situation plays out."
DeAngelo led the Rangers' defensemen in scoring with 15 goals and 38 assists in the 2019-20 season. He finished 12th in Norris Trophy voting.
The 25-year-old DeAngelo, however, committed a costly penalty in the Rangers' 2021 home opener and was benched for two games after the mistake. He then had a rough outing Saturday against the Pittsburgh Penguins, as New York allowed four goals with DeAngelo on the ice in a 5-4 overtime loss.
League sources told ESPN and The Athletic that DeAngelo also got into a minor altercation with goaltender Alexandar Georgiev after Saturday's loss to the Penguins.
DeAngelo, drafted No. 19 overall in the 2014 draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning, has recorded no goals and one assist in six games this season.
If DeAngelo clears waivers, he could be added to the Rangers' taxi squad.
