Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Washington Capitals defenseman Christian Djoos used a one-handed poke check to score a goal Monday night against the Los Angeles Kings.

The Capitals executed a series of passes to set up the score, beginning with star forward Alex Ovechkin's feed to Djoos in the right faceoff circle.

Djoos returned the pass to Ovechkin, who fired a one-timer at the net that Kings defenders deflected away.

The loose puck slid to Djoos and the defenseman chipped in the score off the crossbar to beat Kings goalie Jonathan Quick.

Djoos' goal gave the Capitals a 4-3 lead midway through the second period. Washington, led by Evgeny Kuznetsov's four-point night, defeated the Kings 6-4.

It was Djoos' first score of the season and he has five points (one goal, four assists) in the 2018-19 campaign. He missed the last 24 games after undergoing left thigh surgery for compartment syndrome. He returned against the Florida Panthers on Saturday night.

The Capitals (31-18-7) face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.
