Colorado Avalanche fan shatters penalty box glass

Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A Colorado Avalanche fan accidentally shattered the glass in the penalty box in the third period of a 6-4 loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

There was 4:31 remaining in the game when the glass hit the ground on Tuesday at Pepsi Center in Denver. Players were standing on the ice during a stoppage in play when the fan tapped lightly on the glass on the side of the sin bin. The taps were enough to shatter the glass completely, sending it on top of several fans.

Avalanche arena staff cleared the area before cleaning it up.

Oilers defender Matt Benning was and the Avalanche's Matt Calvert were sitting in their respective penalty boxes during the sequence, with Benning sitting near the shattered glass.

Kyle Brodziak, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Darnell Nurse all scored for the Oilers. Mikko Rantanen, Colin Wilson and Gabriel Landeskog scored for the Avalanche.

The Avalanche face the St. Louis Blues at 8 p.m. on Friday at Enterprise Center in St. Louis. The Oilers face the Winnipeg Jets at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
