The Oilers were 36-40-6 in 2017. He led the team to a 123-119-24 mark in four seasons as head coach. McLellan joined the Oilers in 2015 after seven seasons as coach of the San Jose Sharks.

Hitchcock is the third-winningest coach in NHL history. He led the Stars to a Stanley Cup in 1999 and was named the NHL's best coach in 2011-2012.

Oilers president of hockey operations and general manager Peter Chiarelli has a news conference at 1 p.m. to speak about the moves.
