June 21 (UPI) -- Former Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz has been named the coach of the New York Islanders. The Islanders made the announcement on Thursday.
"He is and has been one of the top coaches in the National Hockey League. I am excited to have the opportunity to work with him."
Trotz, 55, announced his resignation from the Capitals on Monday, just days after winning the first Stanley Cup in franchise history. He posted a 205-89 record in four seasons with the Capitals. He owns a 557-479-60 mark in 19 seasons as an NHL head coach.
He coached the Nashville Predators from 1998 through 2013.
