The Ottawa Senators signed defenseman Mark Borowiecki to a two-year, $2.4 million contract extension, the team announced Thursday.

Borowiecki, who is entering the final season of a three-year, $3.3 million contract, led the NHL in hits (364) and penalty minutes (154) last season.

The 28-year-old Ottawa native collected one goal and two assists in a career-high 70 games last season with the Senators. Borowiecki did not record in a point in two playoff games, missing the majority of Ottawa's run to the Eastern Conference final due to a lower-body injury.

Borowiecki has four goals, 13 assists and 436 penalty minutes in 217 career contests since being selected by Ottawa in the fifth round of the 2008 draft.
