Hayes, 27, had two goals and one assist in five games this preseason. He initially signed a professional tryout offer with the Devils on Aug. 23.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Hayes provides the Devils with another big body on the roster.

"Jimmy is one of those guys that's made it hard on us," Devils coach John Hynes told NorthJersey.com on Saturday regarding the organization's upcoming roster decisions. "He's played well. He's been a factor. He's a big, strong, NHL body with good skill and he works hard."

Hayes was a second-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2008. He played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers and Boston Bruins, recording 100 points (51 goals, 49 assists) in 301 career games.
