Los Angeles Chargers cut Pro Bowler Darrell Stuckey

Aug. 5 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Chargers have released veteran safety Darrell Stuckey.

Los Angeles announced the move on Friday. Stuckey, 30, was a fourth round pick by the Chargers in the 2010 NFL Draft. He had 94 tackles, six fumble recoveries, five passes defended, two forced fumbles, a sack and a touchdown in seven seasons with the franchise, but never started a game. The standout special teamer was a Pro Bowl selection in 2014.

"For the past seven years, Darrell has been a difference maker for our franchise both on and off the field," Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said in a team statement. "He followed up a Pro Bowl season in 2014 by being named the Chargers Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2015."

"You couldn't ask for a better person to represent the organization than Darrell, and we want to sincerely thank him not only for what he has meant to the Chargers, but for what he has meant to the community as a whole. Darrell, his wife Lacie, and his children will always be part of the Chargers family, and we wish them all the best now and in the future."

Stuckey was a five-time team captain and three-time Special Teams Player of the Year. The Kansas product was put on the active/physically unable to perform list on July 29, at the start of training camp. He was released with a failed physical designation and is rehabbing his knee. Stuckey injured the knee in the Chargers' season-ending loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Jan. 1 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.
