The Toronto Maple Leafs signed defenseman Nikita Zaitsev to a seven-year, $31.5 million extension on Tuesday.
The deal runs through the 2023-24 season, according to the Maple Leafs.
Zaitsev, 25, scored 36 points (four goals, 32 assists) as a rookie this season.
Zaitsev, a native of Moscow, played seven seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League before joining the Maple Leafs, recording 32 goals and 63 assists in 317 games.
Toronto also announced the signing of forward Ben Smith to a one-year, $650,000 contract.
Smith had four points (two goals, two assists) in 36 games with Toronto after being claimed off waivers from the Colorado Avalanche.
The 28-year-old has also played for Chicago and San Jose and has tallied 54 points (29 goals, 25 assists) in 237 career NHL games.
