Calgary Flames ink Sean Monahan to seven-year, $44M deal

The Calgary Flames signed center Sean Monahan to a seven-year contract extension Friday.

The deal is worth about $44 million, according to Sportsnet. Monahan became a restricted free agent on July 1.

Monahan, 21, will be entering his fourth season in the NHL with the Flames after posting three consecutive seasons of 20-plus goals to start his career.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound native of Brampton, Ontario, scored 27 goals with career-highs in points (63) and assists (36) in 81 games last season. He has recorded 159 career points (80 goals, 79 assists).

Monahan, the sixth-overall pick in the 2013 NHL draft, will represent Team North America at the World Cup of Hockey next month.
