Denver Broncos assistant Michael Wilhoite arrested on suspicion of assaulting police officer

Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Denver Broncos outside linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, Denver Sheriff's Departement records showed Monday.

Wilhoite, 38, was arrested at 3:25 p.m. local time Sunday and remains in the downtown detention center on a no-bond hold. He was due in court Monday for a charge of second-degree assault of a peace officer.

"We are aware of a situation involving Michael Wilhoite that occurred Sunday and are in the process of gathering more information," the Broncos said.

According to a probable cause statement from police, an officer working at the Denver International Airport noticed Wilhoite leave his gray 2021 Ford Bronco unattended in a lane in the departure area. The officer told Wilhoite, once he returned, that he could not leave the car unattended.

Wilhoite then allegedly told the officer to "shut the [expletive] up," according to the probable cause statement. The officer again told Wilhoite he could not leave the car unattended, leading Wilhoite to repeat his initial expletive.

Wilhoite then allegedly bumped the officer in the chest. The officer shoved Wilhoite back. Wilhoite then punched the officer in the face, which resulted in him falling to the ground. The officer responded by using his taser, but Wilhoite was able to drive away.

Wilhoite became Broncos' outside linebackers coach in 2023. He previously worked for the Los Angeles Chargers and New Orleans Saints. He also played for the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks over six years.
