Deion Sanders adds NFL legend Marshall Faulk to Colorado coaching staff

Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Deion Sanders hired fellow Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk to serve as the Colorado Buffaloes' running backs coach, the school announced.

Faulk is now the third Hall of Famer on the staff, joining Sanders and senior quality control analyst Warren Sapp. He has no formal coaching experience, but is widely regarded as one of the best running backs in NFL history.

Faulk, who ranks fifth in league history in yards from scrimmage, won a Super Bowl in 1999-2000 and MVP the next season, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

The Buffaloes, who logged a winning record just once from 2006 through 2023, went 9-4 last season. They ranked 31st in offensive points per game (32.9) and allowed the 42nd fewest points per contest (23).

They ranked 69th in yards per game (383.2), and were largely led by quarterback Sheduer Sanders, wide receiver Travis Hunter and the nation's sixth-best passing attack, which averaged 318 yards per game. The Buffaloes averaged just 65.2 rushing yards per game, the fewest in FBS Division I.

Gary Harrell, who also worked for three seasons with Sanders at Jackson State, served as Buffaloes running backs coach for the last two years. He is no longer listed on the staff.

Colorado will open the season at home against Georgia Tech on Aug. 30 in Boulder.
